Though he has now found fame as the man who created the NBC hit show; “Heroes”, Tim Kring has had a long career as a screenwriter and television producer. But he started out on a very different course, graduating from the University of Santa Barbara with a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies before deciding to study film.
He was born Richard Timothy Kring on July 9th, 1957 in El Dorado County, California. He long had an interest in the religious and mythical and this led him to his degree in religious studies. He followed up with another degree, graduating from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts in 1983. He is married and has two children, age seven and eleven years old, and collects acoustic guitars for a hobby.
As somewhat of a jack of all trades within the business, he has worked as everything from grip (lighting and rigging), gaffer (head of the electrical department), and cameraman, to writer, producer, and creator on both his own shows and those of other people. The 1980's show Knightrider about a talking car gave him his first opportunity as a screenwriter. He wrote for the show that stared David Hasselhoff in 1982.
He co-wrote the movie Teen Wolf Too with Jeph Loeb, a pairing that would be repeated later when Loeb would join Kring in writing for Heroes. However his rise to fame only truly began in the 1990s, when in 1996 he became the executive producer of the hit medical drama, “Chicago Hope”. Two years later and in association with the X-Files executive producer Howard Gordon, he co-created Strange World. The show ran for just thirteen episodes (only nine of which were broadcast in the US), but in 2001 he created a far bigger hit in Crossing Jordan.
Crossing Jordan-following the life of Dr Jordan Cavanaugh and the Boston police forensic medicine department-ran for an impressive six seasons; a total of 117 episodes before it was cancelled. This, Kring said gave him no regrets.
It was shows like Lost, Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives that Kring said paved the way for the creation and success of Heroes-his biggest hit yet. It was these that popularised the intrigue endings of serialised shows, however these ultimately proved frustrating for audiences and became their pitfall. Kring took a lesson from that failure by making for a quicker resolution to storylines whilst retaining intrigue.
The religious theme has remained with him. Though not confirmed, the title of Crossing Jordan would appear to be a pun based on the lead role's name, Jordan, and the Biblical metaphor of crossing the river Jordan. This represented the passage between life and death which when considering Jordan's career seems fitting.
So too can it be seen in the names of the characters in his current hit, Heroes, with names such as Isaac, Noah, Micah, Peter, and Gabrielle appearing. Season three of the show is currently in pre-production. ©2007-2008 HeroesFanatics.com - All Rights Reserved Add as favourites (178) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 10147 | E-mail
