Character's BackgroundThe son of a watchmaker, and a watchmaker himself, Gabriel Gray dreamed of bigger and better things. He always wanted to be special but there was nothing special about a watchmaker. Unknowingly at first Gabriel is special, he has the ability to analyze complex systems and intuitively understand how they work without special education or training. Longing to become something more Gabriel adopts the name Sylar and turns to killing instead of watchmaking. He beings targeting people that have special abilities and with everyone he kills he then steals their power. To understand how other's powers work he has to see their brain, so he opens their skull and removes their brain. Any ability he steals he seems to gain instant control of it. Some seem to overpower him until he gets used to them though, for instance when he takes Dale Smither's (portrayed by Rusty Schwimmer) enhanced hearing you see him grimace on a few occassions due to the effects of his ill gotten super hearing. Gabriel was Chandra Suresh's (portrayed by Erick Avari) first patient. Gabriel uses information from Chandra's notes to find the name and adresses of others with special powers. Sylar, being Chandra's first recorded study is dubbed "Patient Zero", though sometimes over the course of six months the study is terminated, as the two have a falling out. In a taped phone conversation discovered by Chandra's son Mohinder, Sylar states that Chandra "made [him] this way," and refers to a mysterious "uncontrollable hunger" that he now experiences. Chandra wants nothing to do with Sylar at this point. Now in posession of a partial list of Chandra's, Sylar is traveling the country killing off all he finds on the list. He has been apprehended on a few occasions by "the company" and by the FBI but has managed to escape each time. At the end of season 1 it seems Sylar has died at the hands of Hiro Nakamura (portrayed by Masi Oka). Hiro drives his sword through Sylar, during the epilogue Sylar vanishes, leaving only a bloody trail leading from where he laid to an open manhole cover.
