Character's Powers and abilitiesNathan possesses the ability to fly. His power of self propulsion not only allows him to soar without effort, he has also demonstrated the ability to carry at least one other person during flight without any difficulties. Exact speed at which he can travel is unknown, but on one occasion during the "Hiros" episode Nathan broke the sound barrier with no apparent physical effects. Character's BackgroundNathan's parents are Angela Petrelli (portrayed by Christine Rose) and the late Dallas Petrelli, who was a Vietnam Vet. Following in his father's footsteps Nathan joined the U.S. Navy as a pilot and served in Servia, Bosnia, and Rwanda. After serving his country in war, Nathan settled down as a lawyer working at the District Attorney's office. Unbeknownst to Nathan, the District Attorney was working to expose the mafia connections of one of his father's clients, Linderman (Dallas and Linderman served together in Vietnam). One evening while driving Heidi (portrayed by Rena Sofer) to a party, another vehicle repeatedly crashes into them. Nathan inadvertently flew from the car causing it to lose control and veer off the freeway leaving his wife paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Nathan blames himself for the accident. Six months later Nathan is running for Congress in New York's 14th Congressional district. About this time Peter Petrelli (portrayed by Milo Ventimiglia) approaches him regarding these disturbing and reoccurring dreams he's having of flying. Unconvinced and unamused Nathan disregards Peter, focusing back on his campaign. Peter somehow lures Nathan to an alley where he witnesses Peter throw himself from a rooftop. As Peter falls towards Nathan, without realizing he flies up towards Peter to catch him. He grabs hold of Peter and slows his descent but loses his grip and Peter falls to the ground. Slightly battered Peter wakes in the hospital to find his brother at his bedside. Peter tries to discuss what happened but Nathan denies it. Not until Peter threatens to jump off another rooftop does Nathan admit to his ability to fly.
