Character's Powers and abilities

Matt is telepathic but lacks control over his power.  He cannot deactivate it fully so he is always picking up some form of thoughts from anyone in the vicinity.  Early on straining to pull thoughts from someone caused him to get headaches and nosebleeds.  As the show has progressed, so has his ability.

Character's background

Matt is a police officer with the LAPD.  He has tried to become detective on 3 occasions, but because of his dyslexia he cannot pass the qualifying exams.  Matt first becomes aware of his ability when he begins hearing the thoughts of Molly Walker, a little girl who is hiding from a serial killer named Sylar (portrayed by Zachary Quinto).  When he finds the girl, suspicion of how he knew her location leads to his arrest.

After proving his ability to read minds in the FBI's interrogation room, he is offered a position to assist in the apprehension of Sylar.  After a long day at work, Matt stops at a local bar where he notices a man staring at him.  After a few minutes Parkman collapses on the floor, unconscious.  Upon waking, Matt finds himself strapped to a table with Noah Bennet (portrayed by Jack Coleman) standing over him.  Noah explains that they had to drug him, as Matt is telling him what he last remembers.  Matt tries to read Bennet's mind to find out who he is working for but The Haitian (portrayed by Jimmy Jean-Louis) blocks Matt's abilities.  Afterwards Noah instructs The Haitian to "go deep" and clean out Parkman's memories.
